About an offense to the Jewish community

I do so apologize about an anti-semitic “joke” that was told by me at a desperate moment in my family life at a Thanksgiving dinner that was anything but. It was told among a series of offense jokes that were similarly stupid but logically clever. I will not repeat them, obviously. Some were about handicapped people (I am one.) Also, for decades I have been trying to discern whether I myself have Semitic ties as all of my mother’s friends in our old community in New Jersey were Jewish and so were many of mine. As I said I will not repeat the “joke” I will just identify it as the one about a Volkswagen. I am so very very sorry. There was an argument going on and I was feeling desperate and the joke was told to offend my father for his support of his Jewish friends and culture. It was irresponsible of him to spread it around. I sensed that he had and I was terrified. This was 3 or 4 years ago.

I just realized a few hours ago that this still has not died down.

All I can say is, my closest friends have been Jewish and where I think of myself as both Jewish and Catholic I resolve that as being a Jew for Jesus and a several types of Christian.

I need to pray about this some more and if I have anything more meaningful to say about it I will do so.

Please note, WITHOUT introducing any levity to this post would like to point out that to come after me in any way for this unfortunate slur at this particular time would be like the joke about a movie called “Godzilla vs. Bambi.” or, alternately, “Jaws 3 People 0.”

It was a joke. A stupid joke. I didn’t mean anything by it. I always used to tell stupid jokes. It was an embarrassent to me. It was the “mole-wart” thing. I don’t do it any more.

I am so sorry for the offense. It was not intended.
